Prepared, Informed, and Accountable: Your Checklist for November 3rd

Prepared, Informed, and Accountable: Your Checklist for November 3rd

Our Founders did not hand us a republic so we could treat Election Day as an afterthought. Samuel Adams reminded citizens that casting a ballot means “executing one of the most solemn Trusts in human Society,” a trust for which every voter answers to God and country. That trust begins before you ever step into the booth. This week, confirm your registration is active and your polling place hasn’t changed. www.Vote.gov can check your registration status and help you find your local polling place. Then look up exactly what identification your state requires and put it in your wallet TONIGHT. Did you know that Samuel Adams also argued that showing identification gives the people further security in the free exercise of their right to vote? Just a thought…

Next, do your homework. Pull a sample ballot from your county election office and study every race, not just the ones dominating the headlines. Midterms decide Congress, but also governors, sheriffs, judges, school boards, and ballot measures: the offices closest to your daily life, and the powers the Tenth Amendment reserves to the states and the people. Read candidates’ records, not just their ads. Ask whether each one honors the limits of the Constitution, the separation of powers, and the rights secured in the Bill of Rights. Write down your choices and bring your notes with you.

Finally, vote with conscience and confidence. Plan your time, expect lines, and stay put. Listen closely! I cannot stress this enough! If a problem arises with your registration, ask for a provisional ballot rather than walking away. Do not give up! Treat poll workers with courtesy, because they are your neighbors serving their community. Self-government only works when ordinary citizens like us show up prepared and take the duty seriously. Do your part on November 3rd, and bring a friend who loves this country as much as you do.
