We are days away from the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Throughout the campaign leading up to this point we heard about his love for his country, his politics, goals, cabinet, and passion to Make America Great Again.
What truly is remarkable is that only one other time in history has a U.S. president served two non-consecutive terms. The president? President Grover Cleveland. He served from March 4th, 1885-March 4th, 1889, and March 4th, 1893-March 4th, 1897.
As Dave Manuel writes,
“What were the circumstances behind Grover Cleveland serving two non-consecutive terms in the White House?
To start, Cleveland was quite popular (at least until the end of his second term in the White House) - this is evidenced by the fact that he won the popular vote three times - in 1884, 1888 and 1892.
When running for re-election in 1888, Cleveland was up against Benjamin Harrison, a Republican from Indiana.
Despite winning the popular vote, Cleveland was easily beaten, as Harrison ended up winning 233 of the 401 Electoral College votes.
In 1892, the still-popular Cleveland ran again as the Democratic nominee. This was a rematch of the 1888 election, as Harrison was running as the incumbent. To add a further wrinkle into the proceedings, James B. Weaver was also running.
Cleveland would win the popular vote for the third straight election. This time, however, Cleveland would also win the electoral college, as he ended up with 277 of the 444 electoral college votes.”
It is interesting to think that over the last 8 years our country lurched to the right, then to the left, and now back to the right. Can I guarantee that this presidency will run perfectly? I cannot. Do I know that we will be better off? I do not.
What I do know is that there is more hope in this country than I have seen in a long time. People want strong leaders who are willing to do what is right regardless of what their detractors may think. The President of the United States is not a popularity contest and it is NOT easy. It is one of the toughest jobs on the planet…both sides of the aisle would agree.
The role only pays $400,000/year with a $50,000/year expense account. Did you see how much Juan Soto signed with the Mets this past fall? $785mil over 15years!
People do not chase the office of the presidency because of money. They do it because of the impact they can create on our awesome country.
USA Today published an article on November 21, 2024. You can click here to read it in its entirety. It outlines people from multiple walks of life regarding why they are hopeful for the upcoming Trump administration. The writer sums it up well by saying,
“For tens of millions of Americans, Donald Trump's victory sparked a wave of excitement and hope, particularly when it comes to their wallets. Trump campaigned heavily on his plans to lower gas prices, slow inflation, reduce interest rates and make America affordable again, and won a resounding victory earlier this month.
Voters who opposed Trump worried that agenda would put economic concerns above human rights, access to health care and competent government.
But Trump voters we interviewed across the country said the economy is their single-biggest concern, and they're eager for the president to reverse Biden-era policies they blame for post-pandemic price increases.”
This hope that is in our nation is focused on improving our citizens’ ways of life. That should excite everyone.
On January 20th, we enter into a new four-year experience with a leader we have some history with. Our hope is that our country improves. I encourage you to join me in praying for him, his leaders, and the tough decisions ahead of them. Let us remain vigilant to call out the poor decisions that may be made or attempt to be made and remain patriots for this great land.
