Liberty's Engine: Why America Must Choose Capitalism Over Socialism

America was founded on the conviction that our rights come from God, not government, and among them is the right to keep what we earn through hard work. The Founders saw property as the foundation of liberty. In Federalist No. 10, James Madison argued that people's various abilities to acquire property must be protected, stating that “The protection of these faculties, is the first object of government.” The Fifth Amendment prevents taking private property without fair compensation, and Congress holds limited, specified powers, not a command to run the economy.

Socialism flips that idea on its head. When you place economic decisions in the hands of the state, it concentrates power, and concentrated power is exactly what checks and balances, representative government, and the Bill of Rights were built to prevent. When government controls your paycheck, your healthcare, and your business, it controls your choices. Free markets, on the other hand, spread power among millions of citizens making financial decisions. That system turned a small republic into the most prosperous nation in history and lifted numerous families, including immigrants who arrived with nothing, into the middle class.

Capitalism rewards work, invention, and risk. It strengthens families and communities who choose to give and help others rather than through a governmentally forced redistribution of resources. In a nation of free enterprise, the next great idea can come from a garage in Ohio as easily as a boardroom in New York. Resisting socialism is not apathy toward the struggles of others. Instead, it is the belief that free people, not central government can lift each other up. Our responsibility is to protect the limited government the Founders gave us and hand our children the same liberty and opportunity we received.
