Leif Erikson Day: A Celebration of Courage and Faith
Leif Erikson Day: A Celebration of Courage and Faith
Yesterday, October 9th, our country observed Leif Erikson Day. Around the year 1000, Leif Erikson, son of Erik the Red, explored the shores of the American continent, nearly five centuries before Columbus. However, the date honors a later voyage that occurred on October 9th, 1825, the ship Restauration landed in New York after three months at sea from Stavanger, Norway, and its 52 passengers represented the first organized Norwegian emigration to America. Many were seeking freedom of religion, the liberty our First Amendment secures. They did not come for free handouts, but for a chance to work, worship, and build. If only we saw more of that today.
Wisconsin became the first state to officially adopt Leif Erikson Day in 1930, and by 1956 seven states recognized it. Washington chose to act. Congress, by joint resolution (Public Law 88–566) approved on September 2nd, 1964, and authorized the President to proclaim October 9th each year as Leif Erikson Day, a provision now found at 36 U.S.C. § 114. Notice what it does not do. It creates no federal day off, no new agency, and no new spending. It is simply an invitation for free citizens to remember. As President Nixon wrote, Erikson’s crew showed “a spirit of adventure and courage” that overcame Old World fears.
At its heart, Leif Erikson Day celebrates immigration and ethnic heritage. It honors the generations of Nordic Americans who contributed to our country. Large numbers of them settled the Upper Midwest, where they raised farms, churches, and schools and became Americans without abandoning the faith that shaped them. They prized self-reliance, family, and community, the virtues of a free republic.
President Johnson’s first proclamation directed that the flag be displayed on all government buildings that day. So every October 9th, fly yours, share the Viking story with your children, and give thanks for a nation where courage, faith, and liberty still deserve celebration.
